Sacred Objects, 2025

“That looks like a squid” said Banana Joe, and indeed, through the flow of improvisational quilting, a squid emerged. The material used for the colorful shapes in this piece was digitally printed with my watercolor designs. I made the paintings while on a tiny sailboat in the Bahamas with sharks, sea life, and squid swimming around us, and no space for my other artistic outlets. Designing my own fabric extends the art making process, and deepens my relationship with the work. After dissecting the printed paintings, I re-imagined them as talismans or icons in the deep dark sea of time. “That looks like another squid” Is the connection real or manufactured? The urge to turn abstraction into narrative is universal, and I invite viewers to bring their own interpretations to the piece.
