Artist Statement:
My work is driven by the joy and flow of improvisational piecing and quilting, allowing my hands to translate my thoughts and life experiences into the quilt. Each piece is seeded with a traditional shape - the triangle, the stripe, the square - then grows organically and unexpectedly. I upcycle, design, or dye the fabric I use to deepen my relationship with the materials and extend the art making process. I am inspired by the automatic techniques employed by early 20th century Surrealists, in their desire to bypass rational thought and tap into the unconscious. The urge to turn abstract forms into meaningful symbols is universal, and in the unraveling each of quilt’s personal significance, I participate in the ancient work of building worlds and narratives.
