Setting Sun, 2025

The “Green Flash” is a phenomenon where a blip of green light briefly appears as the sun falls below the ocean’s horizon. It requires the perfect atmospheric conditions, so rare that some believe it to be a myth. I am drawn to this ephemeral event - and like so many transitory experiences that leave no trace, its very reality can feel uncertain. The centerpiece of this quilt is a thrifted shirt dress, broken down and reassembled into an ambiguous monolithic form. Where one person sees chaos, another sees exuberance. The dense quilting in sunset colors, is a plaid of longitude and latitude, includes a green flash as proof that I saw it. My work is driven by the joy and flow of improvisational quilting, and how my thoughts and life experiences are revealed in the work.
